Using Overrides

Overrides change the amount in a government form field that normally receives data from a calculation. When you enter an override in a government form field, the amount will not change from a calculation unless you remove the override.

Overridden amounts display in government forms in pink font color. You can also create a report showing a summary of all overrides in a return using Overrides on the Review menu. See Reviewing the Field Override Report for more information.

Adding or Clearing an Override in Government Forms

  1. Open a government form.
  2. Select a field that has a yellow background color, which indicated it can be overridden.
  3. Do one of the following to display the Override window:
    • Click in the Insert group on the Home tab.
    • Right-click and select Override.
  4. Do one of the following:

    1. Accept the default caption (the current user ID, current date, and current time) or enter a different caption, and click OK.
    2. Note: The caption displays in the Override and Input Override reports. If you do not enter a caption, the system saves the default caption of current user ID, current date, and current time.

    3. Enter an override amount and press Enter, or tab to exit the overridden field. The text is pink indicating the amount is an override.

    ClosedClear an existing override.

Click to delete an existing override. When you exit the field, the text changes from pink to the default font color.

Clearing All Overrides in a Tax Return

  1. Open a return that has at least one overridden field.
  2. Click All Overrides in the Delete group on the Review tab.
  3. Click Yes to clear all overrides in the tax return.

Warning! You cannot recover cleared overrides.

Notes:

  • Clearing overrides does not remove the amounts. When cleared, the next calculation can change the amount.
  • You must have edit permissions assigned for the Tax Preparation > Delete all overrides functional rights to clear all overrides in a tax return. Staff without this permission are still allowed to delete overrides on a per field basis.
