Changing a Client Type

The client type in the client profile is editable after the profile has been saved. The profile information that is only specific to the original client type will be cleared if you change the selection.

ClosedUpdating the Client Type of a Single Client

  1. Open Dashboard, click Application Links on the navigation panel, and then click Client Manager under Clients.
  2. Select the check box to the left of a client to update in the grid.
  3. Click Open in the Edit group on the Home tab to display the Client Profile window.
  4. On the General window, change the client type selection. A warning message displays stating that the profile information that is not common with the new client type will be cleared. See Transferring Client Data below for information on the client data that is transferred.
  5. Notes:

    • You can change standard clients to any client type other than custom and custom clients to any other client type.
    • The availability of client types depends on returns that are associated with the client. See Changing Types for Clients with Returns below for more information.
  6. Click Change Type on the confirmation window.
  7. Enter needed information that did not transfer when the client type was changed.
  8. Select one of the following to save your changes:
  9. Button Description
    Save Saves the changes and the window stays open for editing.
    Save & Close Saves the changes and exits the window.

ClosedUpdating the Client Type of Multiple Clients

You can change the client type for multiple clients by doing the following:

  1. Open Dashboard, click Application Links on the navigation panel, and then click Client Manager under Clients.
  2. In the Client Manager grid, select the check box to the left of each client to update. You must select 100 or fewer clients of the same client type.
  3. Select Update Multiple > Client Type Only from the Home ribbon.
  4. On the General window, change the client type selection. A warning message displays stating that the profile information that is not common with the new client type will be cleared. See Transferring Client Data below for information on the client data that is transferred.
  5. Notes:

    • You can change standard clients to any client type other than custom and custom clients to any other client type.
    • You cannot change multiple business or custom clients to an Individual client.
  6. Click Continue on the warning message. The Client Type Only Confirmation window lists the changes you selected.
  7. Review your changes. If needed, you can remove a change by clearing the corresponding check box. The total number of items listed in the grid and the number of items selected in the grid display in the lower-left corner of the window.
  8. Click Apply Changes.
  9. The Update Multiple Log displays the status of each record. If an update is unsuccessful, Exception displays in the Status column and a brief explanation is given in the Comments column. Select an Closedoption to save or search the log.
  10. Click Close.

All data transfers between client types, except the Entity field for Employee Plan, which only transfers to the custom client type.

Changing Types for Clients with Returns

The client type cannot be changed when the following return types are associated with a client:

  • 1040 - Individual
  • 1065 - Partnership
  • 1120 - Corporation
  • 1120S - S Corporation
  • 1041 - Fiduciary

A single client type can be changed when none of the above return types are present and the following return types are associated with a client:

  • 5500 - Employee Benefit Plan can be changed to Individual, Partnership, Corporation, and Employee Plan.
  • 990 - Exempt Organization can be changed to Corporation, Fiduciary, and Non-Profit.
  • 706/709 - Estate and Gift can be changed to Individual and Fiduciary.
