About Document Locker

The Document Locker is a location where you and your clients can upload files throughout the year in anticipation of upcoming engagements.

For example, if a client receives files that are relevant for their upcoming tax return, but the tax organizer is not yet available, they can upload the files to the Document Locker. Then, when the tax organizer becomes available, the file can be moved out of the Document Locker and attached to the organizer. In the same way, once a tax return has been completed and signed, the tax package can be stored in the Document Locker.

Every client who has a request in Client Collaboration has a Document Locker. A client's Document Locker is accessible to both the taxpayer and spouse (if the spouse was invited to join the request).

Firm staff members can be given access to Document Lockers as well with the Client Collaboration - Request Dashboard - Document Locker permission. The tasks that a staff user can perform in a Document Locker depends on the specific access permission assigned to them. Staff members also must have access permissions for a specific client to view the Document Locker for that client.

Note: Client-uploaded files and finalized tax return packages remain in a Document Locker for up to two years. Retention of firm-uploaded files can range from three months to two years, depending on the firm's retention setting. After that point, the files are moved to the Deleted Files tab in the locker. The date when files are scheduled for deletion is shown in the Expiration Date column in the Document Locker. See Deleting Files in a Document Locker for more information about deleted and expired files.
