Adding Tax Templates

Tax templates allow you to set a master return for a tax year and return type. A tax template contains recurring information that you would like applied to new and rolled forward returns. You can create multiple tax templates for a return type and tax year, and they can be rolled forward to the next tax year.

Note: Template data in free form grids (for example interest/dividends) is not advised due to the complications of existing data.

When you create a return, you can select from a list of available templates for the return type and tax year.

Adding New Templates

To create a tax template, do the following:

  1. Select File > New > New Template on the menu bar or click New Template directly above the grid on the Templates page.
  2. Enter a unique name for the tax year and return type. The name can be up to 30 characters.
  3. Enter a description, if needed. The description can be up to 30 characters.
  4. The most recent tax year installed is selected. To change the year, select from the list.
  5. Select the return type for your template.
  6. Click Create to open the tax template and add it to the applicable view in the Return Manager Templates section.
  7. Enter data to customize your tax template. Because there is no mandatory information required in a tax template, you can enter any applicable information.
  8. When you have entered all data, click to save your changes.

Copying Existing Templates as New Templates

You can also save an open tax template as a new tax template.

To create a template from an open template, do the following:

  1. Select Save As on the Application menu.
  2. Enter a unique name for the tax year and return type. The name can be up to 30 characters.
  3. Provide a description for the template, if needed. The description can be up to 30 characters. The tax year and return type are the same as for the open template and are not editable.
  4. Click Create to open the tax template and add it to the applicable view in the Return Manager Templates section.
  5. Enter or edit data to customize your tax template.
  6. When you have entered all data, click to save your changes.

Note: Tax templates do not support the following functions: calculation, export, set status, remote request, view history, secure return, print options that are calculation dependent, update project, send invoice amounts, diagnostics, letters, return summary, and statements.
