Electronic Filing - General

Q. Why doesn't the government copy of the tax return print when I print the entire paper return for a return selected for electronic filing?

A. ProSystem suppresses the government filing copy of the return when you elect to process a return for electronic filing. An option is available in the Return Configuration Set to change the default on a global basis or on a return-by-return basis onElectronic filing option" field in the General section of the General - Electronic Filing worksheet.

Q. What is a non-standard W-2?

A. A non-standard W-2 is a W-2 that has been altered, handwritten, or typed as opposed to a standard W-2 which is usually a computer-produced W-2 on an IRS form or approved facsimile. If a cumulative Earnings Statement or substitute W-2 is used to enter data on the W-2 record, check the "W-2's nonstandard" field in the Electronic Filing Use Only subsection of the Other section of the Income/Deductions - Wages, Salaries and Tips worksheet.

Q. Who is the Electronic Return Originator(ERO)?

A. The person or firm who collects the actual return from the taxpayer for the purpose of electronically filing it with the IRS is considered to be the ERO. If you are preparing the return and submitting it for electronic filing, you are considered the ERO.

Q. Do I have to submit a new Form 8633, Application to File Electronic Returns, every year?

A. No, if you filed a Form 8633 last year you are not required to file another one this year, unless the information on your previous application has changed. Changes include a change in the contact person or telephone number on the application, a change in the company's structure, change of address, etc. The IRS may periodically require a new 8633 even if you have no changes to your old application. They will let you know when a new application is necessary.

Q. I have processed a return and it is ready except I didn't select electronic filing. How do I add electronic filing to a return that has already been processed?

A. The only way to add electronic filing to a return that has already been processed is to reprocess it with an entry in the "Electronic filing option" field in the General section of the General - Electronic Filing worksheet.

Q. I accidentally released a return and transmitted it to the IRS. Now what do I do?

A. If you accidentally release a return but have not transmitted it, you can unrelease it by simply going to the Release screen. Highlight the return and click on Remove. The return will be removed from the bottom section of the Release screen and placed in the top section.

If you accidentally release a return and transmit it, call the ProSystem Electronic Filing Support Staff immediately. The ELF staff may be able to stop the return from transmitting to the IRS. If the return has already been sent to the IRS, you will have to wait to see if it is accepted. If it is accepted there is nothing more we can do. At this point you may want to contact the IRS. If the return is rejected it is not considered a filed return.
