State Application for Extension

Use the Extensions worksheet under the Extensions category, to request state extensions. Enter unique state or city extension information on the appropriate state and city sections included in this worksheet.

When state or city extensions are requested:

  1. If a state or city has its own extension forms, then that form is prepared.
  2. If a state or city uses a copy of the federal extension, a copy of the federal extension is included in the state or city return.
  3. If a state or city requires no extension to be filed, the state or city extension is not prepared (even if an extension request is made on this form).

Note: An extension is only prepared for states or cities actually included in a particular return. A state or city is included in a return when its state / city code is entered on the "Basic Data" worksheet in the federal "General" category or it is selected on the "Common State- State/City Generation" worksheet and is not suppressed on the "Processing Options" worksheet under the federal "General" category. A state or city is also included in a return when any entry is made on that state's or city's worksheet input screen.

If a state or city requires special text to print on the top of a federal extension form, use the 70 character field provided on the "Extension message to print at the top of the extension form" field in the Federal Extension Information section of the Extension worksheet under the "Extensions" category. Entries in this field print on both the federal copy of the extension and also on the top of any state or city copy of the federal extension. To avoid having this text print on the federal extension form, print the federal form first, then add the state-only or city-only text on the government view of the extension form, and print the state or city copy of the extension.
