Schedule A - General Sales Taxes

The state general sales taxes deduction is calculated automatically based on Form 1040, Line 8b plus any tax-exempt interest, nontaxable combat pay, the nontaxable part of social security and railroad retirement benefits and the nontaxable part of IRA, pension or annuity distributions, the number of exemptions, and the home state code entered on the Basic Data > General section.

Any additional nontaxable income is entered on the Itemized Deduction > State and Local Sates Tax Information section > Additional nontaxable income field.

The local general sales taxes deduction is calculated automatically based on the ZIP code entered on the Basic Data > General section > ZIP code field. An alternate ZIP code can be entered on the Itemized Deduction > State and Local Sales Tax Information > ZIP code - override field.

For taxpayers who lived in more than one state during the year, enter the state code, dates of residency and local general sales tax rate for each. The state and local general sales taxes are determined by the fraction of the year lived in each state.

Enter any general sales taxes paid on specified items. There is a list of items in IRS Schedule A Instructions. This amount is included in the state and local general sales taxes deduction.

To override the state and local general sales taxes deduction calculation, use the Itemized Deduction > State and Local Sales Tax Information > State and general sales taxes - override field.

The state and local income taxes deduction is compared to the state and local general sales taxes deduction and itemized receipts. The greater of the three amounts is used for the state and local taxes deduction unless the code to force the deduction is entered on the Itemized Deductions > State and Local Sales Tax Information > Code for state and local income taxes or sales taxes field.
